Within the context of implementing the Grenelle de la Mer Marine Environmental summit, and in line with the Marine general secretariat's plans to instigate an "administration system for the sea and the coast", the prefectures of Reunion Island, Mayotte and the French Southern and Antarctic Lands decided to set up a server of inter-operable data inspired by the action led from Normandy by the inter-departmental mission for the sea and the coast (MIMEL)..
This secure server, dedicated to State services, will be used to group together all SIG layers relating to the State's actions in the Indian Ocean. This database, which includes both the marine and coastal environments, must be extended to include those lands in the Indian Ocean which are under French jurisdiction. This geographical reference, which is useful for implementing maritime and coastal public policies in Reunion Island, Mayotte and French Southern and Antarctic Lands ("RGÉMer RÉunion-MAyotte-Taaf"), is coordinated by the Reunion Island prefecture (DMSOI) and hosted on Ifremer's SEXTANT server. It is called Sextant REMATA. An agreement suited to the context of the Indian Ocean has thus been drawn up in conjunction with the 3 prefectures. It was signed on 28 February 2012 and the secure server Sextant REMATA is now operational.
