Assign a DOI to the data

Sextant allows DOIs (Digital Object Identifier) to be assigned to the public datadescribed in the catalogues. Data can benefit from a persistent identifier in the same way as scientific publications.

A DOI makes the data citation reliable and provides a stable link to the resource. Data citation is a recognition mark for data producers. The data is also more easily accessible to users who wish to reuse it to verify a result or to continue the work presented in a publication.

Procedure to be followed

In order to assign a DOI to a dataset, elements complementary to the ISO standard and the INSPIRE Directive must be included in the metadata. Then a request for DOI registration is sent by Sextant to Datacite

  • one or more identified authors ;
  • the publisher name (this may be the organization to which the authors belong); ;
  • a date (of creation or publication) ;
  • an identifying code, constructed as follows:
    • DOI:10.12770/unique_id_number_of_the_metadata (ex: DOI:10.12770/6017b53d-a0f4-422d-83b5-7efcd20c9f86).

These elements are used to automatically generate the quote.

Relation with publications and cruises (campaigns)

In parallel with the mechanism for assigning DOIs to geographical data in Sextant, it is possible to cite in a scientific publication form registered in Archimer, the references of the data it uses. The data sets published successively to an oceanographic campaign are associated with the campaign sheet accessible from the oceanographic fleet website.

Landing pages associated with DOIs are evolving to provide direct links to associated resources, such as publications or campaigns at sea. Likewise, it is now possible to specify a main publication in the citation of the dataset.

Statistics

At the end of 2018, 500 datasets on Sextant had a DOI (254 in 2017).
