Abstract The English Channel is a biogeographical transition zone, situated between warm temperate and boreal marine province. This status enables the early detection of trends in the oceanic climate regime between two provinces. Mean SST maps for February (coldest month of the year) and August (warmest month of the year), from 1986 to 2006, were produced.

Lineage Images (provided as rasters, 1.2 km cell size, referenced in WGS 1984) were obtained from IFREMER’s CERSAT (located in Plouzané, France) from databases generated for European projects (e.g. MARCOAST, ECOOP). Original data come from the AVHRR/Pathfinder centre (AVHRR sensor). The best images, i.e. those where the percentage of cloud-free pixels was above a threshold of 25%, were used to calculate monthly averages.
