Fish Monitoring by Catch by Small-scale Fisheries around the Scandola Nature Reserve (Corsican National Park)
Catch and fishing effort monitoring data for small-scale fisheries over 3 typical seasons since 2000.
Biometric measurements (size, mass) are collected for fish and crustaceans when caught by small-scale fishing vessels in and around the Scandola nature reserve. Precise information regarding fishing practices, gear, rhythms and fishing sites is also recorded. Within the context of long-term monitoring, changes in samples (species, size), rejected catches in and around the reserve, and fishing effort and practices are monitored using variables measured during each campaign. The location and distribution of the fishing effort along with its evolution over time are estimated during different seasons by counting surface signal measurements with help from the reserve’s employees.

2012 : Last campaign
To perpetuate monitoring with one season per year, with feedback for each season every 3 years (possible actions)
Nombre de points d'observation ou de mesure : 11 geographical areas for net locations.
Areas chosen with a view to covering the sector for small-scale fisheries based mainly at Galeria, Girolata and Porto fishing in and around the Scandola Nature Reserve . Samples taken in, near to, and far from the reserve, thus in areas with varying management systems in place.
Partnership Dimension : implementation by scientists and the reserve (PNRC) in conjunction with material and human means . Contribution to management in partnership fishing professional fishermen.
- Description
-
Monitoring developed in parallel with that of the Port-Cros National Park (implemented the same year) with different sampling strategies.
Combination of two sampling methods :small-scale professional fishing efforts monitored in and around the reserve by locating fishing gear, and mapping and monitoring catches and rejected catch onboard by measuring (size, biomass) total catch in given gear.
