- DYFAMED BENTHOS -
Although the DYFAMED site is near the coast (28 nautical miles from Nice), it is a model site as it is representative of ocean conditions, and is now recognized as a benchmark for oceanographic observation (OceanSITES).
DYFAMED-BENTHOS temporal monitoring which took place in parallel with DYFAMED water column monitoring aimed to study the connection between pelagic and benthic environments, and the benthic response to environmental modifications at depths of over 2300m in the north western Mediterranean. For 12 consecutive years (1991 – 2003), the interface between water and sediment was mainly sampled using multiple core samples, and was studied from a physical, biogeochemical and biological perspective (with an emphasis on Meiofauna), as often as possible, particularly during as “high frequency” period, which included almost monthly sampling ( 7 – 10 campaigns per year) between, 1993 and 1997. At the same time, particle flow was measured both in the water column (DYFAMED monitoring) and close to the sea floor (DYFAMED-BENTHOS monitoring) using particle traps.

1991 – 1992 : Feasibility study and exploration
Core Sampling
1993 - 1997 : Regular, frequent monitoring
Monthly core sampling + particle traps and current metres near the sea bed + anchoring of an autonomous benthic chamber
1998 - 2003 : Limited monitoring
Core sampling
Number of observation or measurement points : one (temporal monitoring at a fixed point)
(Core sample reference point: 43°24.61'N - 7°51.68'E in ED 50)
Samples were taken at one site by (continuous) anchoring. Most of the measurements were obtained using sample analyses in the laboratory.
- Description
-
The core samples which were undisturbed by the water-sediment interface were mainly taken using a Bowers & Connelly MAXICORER multitube core sampler.
Monitoring of the upper benthic layer was conducted using a set of 3 cylindro-conical particle traps with a collection surface area of 0.07 m2 along with an Aanderaa current metre.
In-situ respiration rates were recorded using an autonomous benthic chamber designed for great depths (RAP II), developed by IFREMER-Brest.
