ATLANTIC_CH02_Product_2 / Quantitative analysis of MPA connectivity
Assess whether the MPA network constitutes a representative and coherent network as described in article 13 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
3 products were specified to achieve the second objectif of the challenge:
ATLANTIC_CH02_Product_2 / Quantitative analyse of MPA coherency
The product comprises 4 components:
Distribution of vulnerable marine habitats : Shape represent the distribution of different vulnérable habitats
Distribution biologically or ecologically significant areas (EBSAs)
Critical areas of vulnerable species
Distribution of indicator species
The method used computes the percentage coverage between :
Vulnerable habitats like carbon sinks, reef, kelp...
Ecologically or biologically significant area
Life critical area (feeding , breeding, migratory routes, spawning, dispersal larvea, nursery…) for indicator species
Distribution of indicator species in the study area
and MPA network location.

This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product (the “Product”) is the result of a “challenge” stress test specified by the call for tenders No MARE/2012/11. The challenge partners ( "the producer") were commissioned to perform a number of tests to evaluate marine data according to set user requirements. This product and any resultant data and metadata produced is a consequence of these tests and provided for interest only. The Product is provided on an “as is” basis, and the producer disclaims any and all warranties, conditions, or representations (express, implied, oral or written), relating to the Product or any part thereof, including, without limitation, any and all implied warranties of quality, performance, suitability or fitness for a particular purpose to the full extent permitted by law. The Producer and the Atlantic Checkpoint partners accept no liability for loss suffered or incurred as a result of reliance on the Product or any output of its use. The Producer shall not be liable for any economic loss, loss of profit, loss of business or contract, depletion of goodwill or otherwise, in each case whether direct, or indirect or any indirect loss whatsoever (howsoever caused) including loss or damage suffered as a result of an action brought by any person which arise out of or in connection with the use of the Product or inability to use the Product
Resource constraints
- Use limitation
-
Limited: The product fails in most aspects to meet the objectives but meet some.
- Use limitation
-
Assess MPA coherency requires a good acknowledgement about biodiversity in the study area, for example :
• carbon sinks
• vulnerable habitats (OSPAR habitats or list of VME habitats created by ICES)
• threatened species (with IUCN category ; CR, EN, VU and NT)
• critical area in relationship with the phenology of threatned species (feeding , breeding, migratory routes, spawning, dispersal larvea, nursery…)
This type of information is scattered and it would take a lot of time to collate and standardize it for critical areas. It was impossible, in the time available, to study the effectiveness of the data and estimate the survey area to compute the coverage index.
