System for Acquiring, Validating and Exploiting Data from INSU Vessels North-Western Mediterranean and Channel/Atlantic French coasts
1996 -
- Purpose
-
The aim of this project is to determine current profiles from the surface to depths of 250m in the North-Western Mediterranean using and hull-mounted ADCP (Doppler effect current metre) and associated sensors (temperature, salinity, fluorometry, meteorology) installed on the hulls of the vessels Téthys II and Côtes de La Manche. The vessels’ missions are programmed each year by CNFC (National Coastal Fleet Commission).
In 1996 a project group, designated by INSU and put together based on the MQDP model (Project Development Quality and Methodologies) was put in charge of the studies and the technical installations on board. The INSU Technical Division is now responsible for:
- Maintaining acquisition centres which function continuously, and which are monitored by the crew.
- Retrieving data
- Validating this data (calibration, error correction)
- Distributing products and creating a website to host the database catalogue

1996 : Téthys II vessel equipped
Western Mediterranean Current, T & S data.
1997 : Côtes de La Manche vessel equipped
Atlantic/Channel T & S data
2011 : Installation of a current metre on CDLM Atlantic/Channel current data
The means implemented by INSU for this project are as follows :
• Oceanographic vessels TETHYS II & COTES DE LA MANCHE
• Two Doppler-effect current metres : ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) Broad Band and Ocean Surveyor 150 kHz from RDI and installed on the hulls of the two vessels (see installation photos).
• Two weather stations
• Two thermosalinographs SB21from SEABIRD.
• A fluorometer 10AU05 from TURNER DESIGN.
The acquisition station functions automatically and requires limited intervention. The vessels’ crew set up, monitor and stop the station.
Measurements are therefore taken all along the vessels’ routinely-travelled routes: both scientific missions and transit. The vessels can also be made available for private organisations, or those which are unrelated to scientific research: Requests must be made to the captain ( alessandrini@dt.insu.cnrs.fr ). A financial gesture will be required of the person requesting the vessel, following examination by a qualified commission.
- Description
-
Since 1997, a group belonging to the technical division of the INSU has been responsible to maintaining onboard installations. The groups is also responsible for data processing. The vessels’ frequent stops enable them to successfully complete their operations within a few days of their deadlines. The verified and validated data is then added to a database.
The available data is distributed in the following formats :
• Matlab
• NetCDF OceanSite
• ASCII , or other format upon request
