The data was gathered by Ifremer and SHOM oceanographic vessels.
The following vessels are with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Ocean Surveyor 150 kHz (OS175) and an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Ocean Surveyor 38 kHz (OS38) : the Pourquoi Pas?, the Atalante
The Suroît is equipped with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Broad Band 150 kHz (BB150).
The Alis is equipped with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Broad Band 150 kHz (BB150).
The data is controlled and validated by SISMER according to a pre-defined protocol.
After processing the ADCP data with CASCADE software, data are available and downloadable in Netcdf format.
For one campaign, there will be:
1) 3 Netcdf files (or more, if different acquisition modes were analyzed with CASCADE)
- 1 raw data file *_0_osite.nc: It represents the concatenation of STA (or LTA) files from VMDAS. The currents are absolute or relative currents, expressed in the geographical reference frame and geo-referenced. They are accompanied by ancillary measurements to evaluate these data (amplitude of the echo received, error estimation, attitude and ship speed measurements, speed over the bottom). It therefore contains the raw U and V data flagged without modification of pitch, amplitude or alignment.
- 1 data file (1E.nc or 0E.nc), intermediate between the raw data and the final filtered data - they are validated, corrected and assigned by a quality information
- 1 file of validated (aggregated) data *_fhv*.nc: It represents the validated data, corrected, assigned a quality information (flag) and filtered.
2) 1 compressed file (in UNIX .tar format) of figures from the CASCADE software: This file contains figures (in .png format) of vectors, bathymetry, roads, various plots, ....
3) A report document available on Nautilus on the page of the concerned campaign.
The document contains all the campaigns processed for a year and by ship if they are public. And for each cruise, the images collected during the data processing with the CASCADE software (path, bathymetry map, quality of the data received, percentages of good data, vector plots) and the problems encountered.
- Description
-
The A.D.C.P. (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) Ocean Surveyor 150 kHz is an acoustic Doppler current meter manufactured by the American company Teledyne marine ( http://www.rdinstruments.com/).
With each acoustic pulse, the current is measured in cells of 4 to 8 m over the entire water column to depths of up to 400 m.
The A.D.C.P. (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) Ocean Surveyor 38 kHz is an acoustic Doppler current meter manufactured by the American company Teledyne Marine ( http://www.rdinstruments.com/).
With each acoustic pulse, the current is measured in 16 to 24 m cells over the entire water column to depths of up to 1000 m.
Each one is fixed under the hull of the vessel. It simultaneously emits four acoustic beams whose main frequency is around 38 kHz or 150 kHz. These beams are oriented at 30° to the vertical of the ship.
The A.D.C.P. (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) Ocean Surveyor 75 kHz is an acoustic Doppler current meter manufactured by the American company Teledyne marine ( http://www.rdinstruments.com/).
With each acoustic pulse, the current is measured by cell from 8 to 16m over the entire water column to depths of up to 700m.
The A.D.C.P. (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) Work Horse 300 kHz is an acoustic Doppler current meter manufactured by the American company Teledyne marine ( http://www.rdinstruments.com/).
With each acoustic pulse, the current is measured per cell from 1 to 8 m over the entire water column to depths of up to 110 m.
The A.D.C.P. (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) Broad Band 150 kHz is an acoustic Doppler current meter manufactured by the American company Teledyne marine ( http://www.rdinstruments.com/).
With each acoustic pulse, the current is measured in cells of 4 to 8 m over the entire water column to depths of up to 385 m.
The emitted acoustic wave reflects on the suspended matter and shifts its phase proportionally to the speed of the reflectors (Doppler effect). These particles are assumed to move at the speed of the water mass. A current is then calculated in the direction of each beam.
With the knowledge of the orientation of the sensor relative to the vessel, the orientation of the vessel relative to a land reference and the knowledge of the speed of the vessel, an absolute current can be calculated.

Data acquisition
- Description
-
The data are processed with the CASCADE software (Chaine Automatisée de Suivi des Courantomètres Acoustiques Doppler Embarqués). CASCADE is a software for validation and visualization of hull ADCP measurements initiated in 1998 at LPO (Laboratoire Physique des Océans - Ifremer) for its research needs in the processing and analysis of ADCP measurements and which is regularly updated.
It was then implemented in an operational mode by the SISMER data center.
It consists of a set of matlab programs.
