Drifting surface buoys
Measurements by drifting surface buoys. This system is a drifting mooring consisting of a surface buoy fastened to a floating anchor by a cable (trip line, buoy rope). It has to monitor as precisely as possible the water volume in which the floating anchor is immersed. The surface buoys are traced by Argos satellites.

Today, operational drifting buoys are 35-40 cm diameter spheres, with one 6-7 m long and 1 m diameter floating anchor, centered at a depth of 15 m. These buoys, known as SVP (Surface Velocity Programme), weigh about 25 kg and have been a part of the Global Drifter Programme (GDP) operated by the Data Buoy Cooperation Panel (DBCP) for almost 20 years. Some of these buoys are equipped with digital probes for measuring temperature and even, in some instances, SBE37 sensors for measuring salinity and temperature.
