Statement

Today, operational drifting buoys are 35-40 cm diameter spheres, with one 6-7 m long and 1 m diameter floating anchor, centered at a depth of 15 m. These buoys, known as SVP (Surface Velocity Programme), weigh about 25 kg and have been a part of the Global Drifter Programme (GDP) operated by the Data Buoy Cooperation Panel (DBCP) for almost 20 years. Some of these buoys are equipped with digital probes for measuring temperature and even, in some instances, SBE37 sensors for measuring salinity and temperature.
