PACOMM – SAMM Arial Campaign (Arial Marine Megafauna Monitoring) – Mainland France – 2011/2014
Flights over France’s metropolitan waters and border areas to observe seabirds, marine mammals, other species of megafauna in open water and human activity (floating waste), with the aim of producing an inventory of spatial distribution and species abundance, and to evaluate spatial and temporal variability.
This part, complemented by other work in the PACOMM programme, provides information which is collated and used for designating and managing protected marine areas to meet requirements for community conservation and promotion of marine areas (Natura 2000, MSFD, local and regional maritime conventions, etc.).

Basic exchange data is publicly available (species, position, date, campaign name) and open access. It will be available on the UMS 3462 website which is currently under construction.
Use of raw data (observation parameters and associated effort) is subject to request from the UMS and the subsequent implementation of a partnership agreement.
- Use limitation
-
The entire dataset (Basic exchange data + observation and environmental parameters) is subject to a 3-year confidentiality period as of the end of the campaign.

Data collected within the context of scientific research for the implementation of the Natura 2000 network at sea. The operational phase was jointly led by UMS 3462 (scientific coordination) and the Marine Protection Agency (overall project coordination).
Data is stored in the Higher Predators database in ACCESS format.
- Description
-
Observations are made from a plane flying over redefined transects at a constant height of 600 feet and a speed of 90 knots. Two observers record the environmental conditions and the following observations (at the surface or below the surface):
- Using the strip transect method (200m strips): observations of seabirds
- Using the line transect method (up to 500m): observations of marine mammals, sharks, rays, bony fish (large fish or shoals of fish) and sea turtles.
- Using the strip transect method: macro waste (200 m strips) and boats (500m lines)
The transects are distributed over 4 strata : coastal (the administrative limit of 12 Nm), neritic ( depths of 0 < 200m), slope (200 to 2000m) and oceanic ( depths of>2000m).
The aircraft are equipped with bubble windows to facilitate viewing below the plane.
- Description
-
All recorded observations only have quantitative (and qualitative) value when associated with the observation effort exerted on a transect (n observation/n search time). This is part of the first phase of analysis when the presence/absence of individuals is evaluated according to the effort and the detection of species. In the second phase, this filtered data could be projected onto the entire area studied.
The coverage of the sample makes it possible to cover all of the coasts.
