Project Memo “Mnemiopsis ecology and modeling: Observation of an invasive comb jelly in the North Sea”
This study centres on a Ctenophore of American origin, Mnemiopsis leidyi, which was introduced in the Black Sea in the 1980s and observed for the first time in 2006 in the North Sea. This project, which involved 5 research organisations, including Ifremer, was instigated by the Interreg Iva MEMO-2 Mers Programme.

- Abstract
-
This study centres on a Ctenophore of American origin, Mnemiopsis leidyi, which was introduced in the Black Sea in the 1980s and observed for the first time in 2006 in the North Sea. This project, which involved 5 research organisations, including Ifremer, was instigated by the Interreg Iva MEMO-2 Mers Programme.
- Purpose
-
Project MEMO to better understand the identification, biology and physiology of this Ctenophore as well as monitoring its presence, behaviour and impact in the 2 Seas region. Model development will enable us to evaluate and predict the environmental and economic impact of M. Ieidyi in this region. These objectives will be achieved in three ways:
1. By drawing up standardised procedures for identification (both morphological and genetic), monitoring and modelling potential habitats and the population dynamics of M. Ieidyi (partner responsible for this part of the project: ILVO).
2. By studying the physiology, feeding behaviour and potential predators of this species through experimentation (partner responsible for this part of the project: IFREMER)
3. Be evaluating the potential environmental and socio-economic costs of the species’ impact through an ecosystem approach (partner responsible for this part of the project: CEFAS).
The final aim, with the support of the EU (Interreg), is to evaluate the risks and to inform both stakeholders and the general public of the potential risks of M. Ieidyi to the marine ecosystem and to commercial activities in the 2 Seas region. This will mean putting forward preventative measures against this potential threat.
