Oceanographic cruise - ORHAGO (Observation of the benthic HAlieutic Resources of the Bay of Biscay)
The ORHAGO cruises (Observation of the benthic aquatic resources of the GOlfe de Gascogne) are part of Ifremer's mission of observation and expertise in support of fisheries management. Their main aim is to obtain series of abundance indices for flatfish and in particular for sole. Consequently, the choice was made to adopt a beam trawl to comply with the standards of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) for flatfish. This choice has made it possible to be part of the campaigns coordinated by ICES and thus to be a member of a community in which the methodology and results can be discussed each year in the ICES WGBEAM working groups.
Since 2013, the ORHAGO campaigns have been used to assess the state of the Bay of Biscay sole stock. They allow this assessment to be carried out analytically, i.e. using a model to analyse and simulate the dynamics of the stock. The ORHAGO campaigns are also a source of information on the evolution of benthic populations and coastal benthic habitats in the Bay of Biscay.

The ORHAGO cruises are annual cruises which aim, through beam trawl tows in the same places and at the same time each year, to :
- obtain information on sole recruitment to improve short-term forecasts of the effect of fishing,
- produce an index of abundance for assessing the sole stock in the Bay of Biscay,
- improve knowledge of the dynamics of sole recruitment by monitoring reference stations near major nurseries,
- to have a series of population indicators to monitor the evolution of benthic ecosystems exploited by fishing.
The data is collected as part of a scientific monitoring programme.
Sampling gear: 4 m wide beam trawl with a 40 mm stretched mesh.
Area sampled: sole habitat in the Bay of Biscay
Sampling unit: 30-minute haul
Period: 1 November - 10 December
Target: 50 to 70 hauls per year, doubled hauls (1 day and 1 night if possible)
• Sample plan(s) :
Systematic with stratification
• Precision on the type of data :
Benthos determined since 2011.
• Parameter(s) observed or measured :
Number, size (fish and commercial benthos species), weight, age ((species of commercial interest whose dynamics are monitored)
• Resolution of the parameter(s) :
By fishing operation, systematic analysis of scientific fishing catches
• Format(s):
The available data exist in the format: csv
