In 2006 and 2007, MABEMONO program (acronym MAcroBEnthos of the eastern English Channel and the south of the North Sea) was leaded in the Marine Station of Wimereux : sampling regular (a station each 5' in latitude and longitude) -more intense in the area of the Flanders sand banks (southern Bight of the North Sea, the sand banks in the south of the Dover Strait and the Ridens area, with a smaller spatial scale) / quantitative samples collected by a Hamon grab (or when impossible, the “Rallier du Baty” dredge) / at each station two replicates (0.25 m²) were taken for an analysis of the associated benthic fauna, the residual of the sieve (2mm mesh) was studied in the laboratory afterwards. [On some sampling stations, others achieved by means of a Van Veen grab (0.1 m²) for a future intercalibration with North Sea Benthos Project]. Data collected during other anterior surveys, with the same protocol than in 1971-1976 (MODIOLES 20004) were added, just like data from Copale-Authie surveys (148 stations in March 1998 and 74 in March 2000) and Benthoseine99 (46 stations in May 1999). Total species richness and total abundance were calculated for each station. Abundances of 16 species were sorted in order to be presented in this work (ABRAALB, AMPESPI, BRANLAN, EBALSPP, ECHICOR, ECHIPUS, GALAINT, GASTSPI, GLYCGLY, OPHEBOR, OPHIFRA, OPHISPP, PISILON, POMATRI, THIASCU, UPOGDEL).Plus total species richness and total abundance

Statistical analysis : the statistical distribution of biological data were tested for normality (histograms, skewness, kurtosis). The data were transformed whem skewness value exceeded |1| and/or kurtosis exceeded 1 and if a normalising function that could improve the data distribution was found. Biological variables were measured on scales based on analytical conventions that are unrelated to the natural processes generated them. Therefore, any transformed scale is as appropriate as those on which these data were originally recorded. Geostatistical interpolation : the spatial variation of biological data were analysed using GENSTAT (GENSTAT 7 Committee, 2004), which is a GENeral STATistics package including the main geostatistical tools. It computes experimentala variograms, fits these with various authorised mathematical models and uses them to calculate kriged estimates on a fine regular grid (of latitudes and longitudes). The grid of points was imported into ArcMap and interpolated with the Spatial Analyst extension in order to create a continuous raster of 1 km² resolution. The resulting maps illustrate the spatial distributions and the variations over time for environmental data studied in CHARM's area. For legends of maps, approximates od the 5th and the 95th quantiles were used for the minimales and maximales values respectively.
