-
Identify the 3 most abundant phytoplankton species in the North Atlantic and then track their abundance over the last century. This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product is the result of a “challenge” stress test forming a part of a group of tests to evaluate marine data capacity according to set user requirements. The products do not constitute a formal climate assessment and should not be used as such.

The challenge was to identify the 3 most abundant phytoplankton species in the North Atlantic and then track their abundance over the last century.
No objectives were achieved:
• datasets that can calculate a time-series on a basin wide and species basis are not available and probably not practical.
• Datasets at individual locations are available but in addition to the spatial limitation also have limited temporal coverage;
• Site and cruise specific data only.
• Even at genus rather than species level there is too little data to make a product that can reflect the basin.

Component is not covered because data does not exist
-
The challenge was to produce a time-series of the 3 most abundant phytoplankton species in the North Atlantic over the last century. Some station data is available but does not cover the entire region or time period, and cannot address the temporal variability of abundance by species of the region in any scientifically robust way.
