Remote monitoring of turbidity and phytoplankton biomass in French Maritime Sub Regions
Daily maps of chlorophyll, mineral materials in suspension and turbidity (in addition to the KPAR attenuation coefficient) in photosynthesis wavelength) are drawn up from marine reflectance data (water colour) provided directly by space agencies (NASA, Agence Spatiale Européenne, EUMETSAT), or by the MyOcean/GMES project on which Ifremer collaborates. Multi sensor maps are also offered by interpolation in order to provide information, even in the presence of cloud cover. Reflectance data is processed by Ifremer algorithms and will enhance an archive which began in 1998. The data is continuously validated thanks to in situ measurements which are mostly provided by equipped buoys or the REPHY network.

The basic data (marine reflectance) is acquired in part within the context of the MyOcean2/GMES project on which Ifremer collaborates. When MyOcean2 data is insufficient, it is possible to suspend the current Ifremer chain in order to work directly from Space Agency data (MODIS and VIIRS via NASA and NOAA), Sentinel-3 via the Space Agency and EUMETSAT.
Validation data includes, as a minimum, the observations from Ifremer’s equipped buoys, and from the REPHY network.
Validation comes from Ifremer’s in situ networks (equipped buoys, and from the REPHY network) but also, though lest frequently, from made by other data users.
